We get the sense that email senders shudder every time Gmail announces changes to its features đŸ˜©

It makes sense. Gmail currently has over 1.8 million active users, and that number grows daily.

So, when changes are announced, we email folks tend to sit up and notice.

It’s been in the works for a little while since being announced over a year ago, but Gmail has started rolling out its new “Manage Subscriptions”, and you may be wondering (read sweating about) what this means for you as an email sender.

We got you.

How Manage Subscriptions works in Gmail

To kick us off, the whole point of this feature is to help Gmail users enhance their inbox experience.

In short, a dedicated tab under Gmail’s inbox labels section allows users to view and unsubscribe from email subscriptions in one place, essentially helping to reduce unwanted emails.

In terms of what this is going to help Gmail users do:

  • Centralise their subscriptions - One ring to rule them all. One place within Gmail to view and manage all email subscriptions.

  • Make unsubscribing super easy - This is what scares most email senders, isn’t it? Your audience can easily unsubscribe from all active mailing lists related to a specific sender.

  • Filtering their emails by volume - Yep, you can filter mailing lists by the number of messages received per quarter.

What does this mean for you?

To stave off the panic, what really needs to change is, well
nothing 🙃

We say this flippantly, true, but if you’ve been following our emails, or have been a successful email sender, you’ll know that:

  1. Readers won’t want to unsubscribe if they feel like your emails carry enough value to have you stick around in your inbox.

  2. If readers don’t want to be there, then let them go. It’s like paying rent for a toxic ex who no longer wants to live with you anyway.

  3. If someone hasn’t unsubscribed already, why would this suddenly make them change their mind? Yeah, the view of your email frequency makes some difference, but again, if there wasn’t value, they’d have left a long time ago.

Don’t forget, Google started rolling out an unsubscribe button beside a sender's name in Gmail a while ago too.

Did you notice a considerable increase in unsubscribes? I bet you didn’t (and if you did, well, sorry for you, but you’re probably sending trash emails đŸ€Ą)

Keep sending good emails - There are likely a ton more email advancements incoming that are going to impact your emails far more drastically.

Threads is a magical place to discover some, shall we say, “unhinged” content 👀

Take this desktop punching bag from the guys at Unnecessary Inventions that automatically types a random, passive-aggressive line to start your next email.

Totally unnecessary, but totally here for it.
